Explanation

(English-origin maxim.) Reconciliation between the parties extinguishes the wrong and bars further suit — once the injured party and the wrongdoer are reconciled, the cause of action is dead.

Where this applies

• After a fender-bender, both drivers exchange insurance information and agree no hard feelings — neither can later file a lawsuit over the same collision.
• A landlord and tenant who disputed a security deposit sit down, settle their differences, and shake hands — the tenant cannot later sue for the same deposit.
• Two siblings who argued over their inheritance meet with a mediator, reconcile, and agree on a division — neither can reopen the dispute afterward.
