Maxim 7.7.10

No one can take advantage of his own wrong.

Explanation

A man may not profit from or found a claim upon his own wrongful act — the law denies every benefit flowing from self-created injury.

Where this applies

  • A landlord illegally evicted a tenant and now wants the court to enforce a new lease.
  • An employer fired someone unlawfully and is trying to benefit from the vacancy.
