Maxim 6.8.8

All have liberty to renounce those things which have been established in their favor.

Omnes licentiam habere renuntiare his quae pro se introducta sunt.

Explanation

A man may renounce a personal privilege — but this maxim does not extend to the renunciation of inalienable rights, which are not his alone to surrender.

Where this applies

  • I was given special tax status that I no longer want — can I give it up?
  • I want to renounce a government benefit I've been receiving.
