Maxim 1.5.255

Of things relating to each other, one being known, the other is also known.

Relativorum, cognito uno, cognoscitur et alterum.

Explanation

Correlative legal concepts are understood together — knowing the right reveals the duty, knowing the grant reveals the obligation, and understanding one side of a legal relationship necessarily illuminates the other. (Duplicate maxim — see also 3.4.12.)

Where this applies

  • Understanding one side of a legal relationship reveals the other.
  • Knowing the right tells you the corresponding duty, and vice versa.
