Maxim 1.5.254

When anything is prohibited, everything by which it is reached is prohibited.

Quando aliquid prohibetur, prohibetur omne per quod devenitur ad illud.

Explanation

A prohibition extends to every means of accomplishing the forbidden act — one cannot evade the law by achieving the same result through a different method.

Where this applies

  • A law bans a result, so all methods of achieving that result are also banned.
  • A prohibition on an end goal extends to every means of reaching it.
