Maxim 3.4.12

Of things relating to each other, one being known, the other is also known.

Explanation

Correlative terms define each other — when one side of a legal relationship is established (e.g., right and duty, principal and agent, trustee and beneficiary), the other side is necessarily implied. (Duplicate maxim — see also 1.5.255.)

Where this applies

  • Knowing the rights of one party reveals the duties of the other.
  • Understanding one side of a legal relationship illuminates the other.
