An absolute sentence requires no exposition.

Explanation

A clear and unambiguous judgment needs no interpretation — where the court has spoken plainly, no gloss or commentary may alter its meaning. (Duplicate maxim — see also 10.1.16.)

Where this applies

  • The court's order is clear and unambiguous — no further interpretation is needed.
  • A plain judgment speaks for itself and doesn't need anyone to explain what it means.
