Maxim 7.4.7

An action should not be given to one who has suffered no injury.

Explanation

Standing in law requires actual injury to a cognizable right — no man may invoke the courts over a wrong he has not personally suffered.

Where this applies

  • A group is suing over a new law even though none of them have actually been harmed by it.
  • My neighbor is upset about a policy that doesn't affect them personally.
