Explanation

(English-origin maxim.) Where a service or obligation is by its nature indivisible, each person bound by it must perform the whole — partial performance by one does not discharge the rest.

Where this applies

• Three tenants share a single septic system that must be pumped as one unit — each tenant is individually responsible for the entire pumping obligation, not just a third of it.
• Two co-owners of a right-of-way are each obligated to maintain the entire road, because road maintenance cannot be meaningfully split in half.
• A group of neighbors shares a single well; since the water service is indivisible, each household is responsible for keeping the whole system operational.
