Explanation

Fraud hides behind vague, general language; the more general the expression, the greater the suspicion that it conceals the true bargain — specificity is the mark of honest dealing. (Duplicate maxim — see also 1.5.54, 7.2.14.)

Where this applies

• The other side is being deliberately vague because specificity would reveal the fraud.
• They're hiding behind general language to avoid making specific commitments.
• A deceiver hides behind vague and general words instead of being specific.
